Wander through the Formal Gardens and beyond

Hanham Court Gardens is a 13th century estate situated on the edge of the Cotswolds, between Bristol and Bath. Home to Julia and Richard Boissevian and their family since 2015, the gardens at Hanham Court have only recently become a prominent feature of the estate, in relation to its long history.
In 1993, the award-winning landscape designers Isabel and Julian Bannerman re-established and transformed the grounds into the inspiring gardens that you see today. The couple have designed gardens across the globe, including the 9/11 Memorial Gardens in New York, Lord Rothschild at Waddesdon Manor and King Charles III at Highgrove.
Over twenty years
Isabel and Julian skilfully designed a sympathetic and deeply romantic garden with a reputation that takes it far beyond Hanham. Today the Boissevain family continue to honour their work, putting their own love and passion for gardening into maintaining this green haven, whilst creating and experimenting with new planting schemes and garden spaces to enjoy.

Guided garden tours

Hanham Court is a family home first and a garden second, which is why it is almost never open. A few times a month we take a small group round: the formal gardens and the ha-ha, then down through the woodland valley to the stumpery, the orchard, and the meadow above the Avon. Around [90 minutes].

How it works
A small group, on foot, for about [ninety minutes]. There is no fixed route and no script. We go where the questions go, so if you want to spend twenty minutes on the crop rotation in the vegetable garden, that is where we spend twenty minutes.

Tours are led by someone who works in the garden rather than a guide reading from a card, which mostly means you get honest answers about what has failed as well as what has worked.

Biodiversity at Hanham Court Gardens

Here at Hanham Court Gardens we are making conscious steps to promote and preserve biodiversity within the gardens and their surrounding landscape.
By encouraging a wide range of native plant species, wildlife and fungi, and adopting a sustainable and organic approach to soil health and gardening, our aim is to ensure a diverse, balanced ecosystem in which they can all thrive.
